A World Beneath Your Feet
Soil, along with fallen leaves and decaying wood, forms the foundation of every wildlife-friendly yard. It supports the plants that will fill your landscape with life while providing shelter and food for an astonishing variety of organisms hidden just below the surface.
Just as it is often better to leave a dead tree standing when it poses no safety risk, setting aside a small brush or log pile in a quiet corner of your yard can become one of the best habitats you create. The first colonizers of fallen wood are usually fungi, lichens, and, in damp places, mosses. Many fungi grow as fine threads that slowly break down wood by releasing enzymes, while specialized wood-decaying species digest the toughest fibers. Some native mushrooms are edible, but many are not, so wild mushrooms should never be eaten unless they have been positively identified by an expert.
Thousands of visible and microscopic fungi work alongside insects such as termites, carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, and other decomposers to recycle dead wood. Over time, they soften and fragment the logs until the nutrients stored in the tree return to the soil, where they can nourish new plant growth.
If your woodpile is large enough, the cracks and cavities can shelter small reptiles and amphibians throughout the year, including skinks, fence lizards, salamanders, and frogs, depending on your region. The abundance of insects living in and around the pile also attracts mammals. In many parts of North America, eastern cottontails, chipmunks, shrews, or even hedgehog-like insectivores such as shrews may visit, while brush piles are especially valuable winter refuges for native wildlife.
A good habitat pile contains branches of different diameters and, ideally, from several native tree species. Adding fresh branches from time to time creates a continuous succession of habitats as older wood decomposes. Eventually, the dark, crumbly humus that forms at the base of the pile can be spread around trees, shrubs, and garden beds as a natural soil amendment.
Throughout the rest of the yard, allow autumn leaves to remain beneath deciduous trees instead of removing every leaf. A layer of leaf litter provides insulation, gradually decomposes into organic matter, and supports a rich community of insects, spiders, millipedes, beetles, and other invertebrates.
Earthworms—along with many native soil organisms—perform essential work beneath the surface. As they tunnel through the ground, they reduce soil compaction, improve aeration, create channels that roots can follow, and help rainwater soak deeply into the soil rather than running off. After a rainfall, you may notice earthworms on the surface because they need oxygen. Avoid harming them: while we tend the visible parts of the garden, these unseen workers quietly maintain the living soil that makes the entire landscape thrive.
Wood-decaying fungi produce specialized enzymes that break down lignin, one of the compounds that makes wood rigid. Many shelf fungi and other wood-decaying mushrooms found on logs perform this important recycling role in forests and backyards alike. Although a few species are edible, many are not, and accurate identification requires expertise.
The North American porcupine is one of the continent’s most distinctive mammals. Like the European hedgehog, it relies on sharp spines for defense, but unlike hedgehogs, porcupines are herbivores that feed on bark, leaves, buds, and other plant material. For a more common backyard visitor across much of the United States, brush piles are also excellent shelter for eastern cottontails, chipmunks, toads, salamanders, and many native reptiles and amphibians.
Closing the Loop: Making the Most of Nature’s Recycling System
Organic waste is far more than trash waiting to be hauled away. Composting transforms kitchen scraps and yard debris into a valuable natural resource, keeping organic material out of landfills while creating nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Better still, a compost pile becomes a thriving miniature ecosystem, supporting countless beneficial organisms that help recycle nutrients back into the earth.
Composting at Home
Composting is surprisingly simple because nature does most of the work. Fungi, bacteria, and other decomposers break down organic matter into a dark, crumbly material called compost—a natural soil amendment that improves soil structure, supplies nutrients, and helps retain moisture.
Creating a successful compost pile requires just a few basic ingredients:
- A compost bin or pile large enough to retain heat.
- Water to keep the material evenly moist.

Two types of organic material:
- Brown materials (about 3 parts): dried leaves, straw, shredded branches, untreated wood chips, or other carbon-rich materials that keep the pile loose and well aerated.
- Green materials (about 1 part): fresh grass clippings, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, and other nitrogen-rich kitchen or garden waste.
Maintaining the right moisture level is important. The pile should feel about as damp as a wrung-out sponge—not soggy and not dry. If it becomes too wet or too dry, decomposition slows. Turning the pile occasionally adds oxygen, stimulates microbial activity, and often causes the interior temperature to rise, speeding decomposition.
More Than Just Compost
Finished compost resembles rich garden soil: dark brown to nearly black, moist, crumbly, and pleasantly earthy-smelling. It can be mixed into garden beds, vegetable gardens, containers, or around native trees and shrubs to improve soil health.
A compost pile also creates habitat for a surprising variety of living creatures. Earthworms, beetles, fungi, microbes, and other decomposers all play important roles in breaking down organic matter. If your pile contains stems or trimmings from native host plants, you may occasionally discover overwintering butterfly or moth chrysalises. If this happens, gently move them to a protected, shaded location outdoors until the adults emerge. Composting doesn’t just recycle nutrients—it can also support local biodiversity and connect you with the hidden life of your backyard.
Winter Shelters, Natural Pest Control
Winter is one of the most important seasons for the wildlife that helps keep a garden healthy. If you look around the base of shrubs, beneath loose bark, inside hollow stems, under rock piles, or in other protected crevices, you'll often find insects and spiders spending the cold months in shelter. Many of these creatures become valuable allies once spring arrives, feeding on species that can damage ornamental plants, vegetables, and fruit trees.
Some spiders weave small winter retreats beneath stones or inside bark, where they remain protected until temperatures rise. Ground beetles, rove beetles, and other predatory insects hide beneath logs, mulch, or leaf litter, emerging in spring to hunt caterpillars, slugs, and other garden pests.
Among the most familiar beneficial insects are lady beetles (ladybugs). During autumn and winter they often gather in large groups inside leaf litter, under loose bark, or in sheltered corners of gardens and woodlands. These bright red beetles—with both adults and larvae being voracious predators—consume enormous numbers of aphids, scale insects, whiteflies, and other soft-bodied pests that attack vegetables, flowers, shrubs, and fruit trees.
Rather than removing every fallen leaf or stem in autumn, leave some natural cover through the winter. Brush piles, dead stems, and leaf litter provide safe overwintering habitat for many beneficial species. If your yard lacks natural shelter, installing an insect habitat or simply leaving a quiet corner undisturbed can significantly increase the number of helpful insects that return each spring.
Starting a Compost Pile
1. Choose the Right Location
A compost pile can be built directly on the ground or inside a compost bin. A bin is often the easiest option because it helps contain materials, conserves moisture, and prevents wind from scattering debris. A pile measuring roughly 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet (about 1 cubic yard) provides enough volume to generate the heat needed for efficient decomposition.
Place the pile directly on bare soil—not on concrete or pavement—so earthworms and beneficial soil organisms can move freely into the compost. Choose a location with good drainage that won't remain waterlogged after heavy rain.
2. What Can You Compost?
Most organic household and yard waste can be composted, including:
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Coffee grounds and paper coffee filters
- Tea leaves and most paper tea bags
- Crushed eggshells
- Grass clippings
- Fallen leaves
- Small prunings and twigs (chipped or cut into short pieces)
- Shredded cardboard
- Plain paper towels and napkins
- Uncoated newspaper in moderation
Avoid adding meat, dairy products, greasy foods, pet waste, invasive weeds that have gone to seed, or plants infected with serious diseases. Compost bins are excellent for turning everyday kitchen scraps and yard waste into a valuable soil amendment instead of sending them to the landfill.
3. Tips for Success
Mix a variety of materials instead of creating thick layers of just one ingredient. Individual layers should generally remain under 4 inches (10 cm) thick.
Chop branches and coarse stems into smaller pieces. Thick branches may take many months to decompose.
Do not compost plants treated with persistent herbicides or those suffering from serious diseases.
Turn the pile occasionally to improve airflow. Although compost can form without turning, regular mixing speeds decomposition and produces a more consistent finished product.
Be patient. Depending on the materials and weather, finished compost usually develops in 6–12 months. Mature compost is dark brown, crumbly, smells like rich forest soil, and no longer resembles the original materials. Larger undecomposed pieces can simply be returned to the next compost pile.
4. Enjoy the Wildlife
A compost pile becomes home to an amazing community of beneficial organisms. Earthworms, millipedes, pill bugs, springtails, beetles, fungi, and countless microorganisms all help transform organic matter into nutrient-rich compost.
If your compost pile sits on bare ground, you may occasionally spot larger visitors as well, including toads, garter snakes, box turtles, or small mammals searching for insects or taking advantage of the warmth generated by the decomposing material. A healthy compost pile is not only an excellent recycling system—it is also a thriving miniature ecosystem that supports the biodiversity of your backyard.
