Fruit Trees: A Feast for Wildlife, Too

For thousands of years, people have selected and cultivated wild fruit trees to produce larger, tastier, and more reliable harvests. Many of the fruit trees now common in North America originated elsewhere before becoming part of home orchards across the continent. Apples from Central Asia, peaches from China, pears from Europe and western Asia, and sweet cherries from Eurasia are now familiar sights in neighborhoods from New England to the Pacific Northwest.

But fruit trees offer far more than fresh produce for people. They create one of the richest seasonal food sources for wildlife, providing blossoms in spring, shelter through summer, and fruit that nourishes birds, mammals, and insects from late summer into winter.

Apples are among the most valuable fruits for backyard wildlife. American Robins, Cedar Waxwings, Northern Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, woodpeckers, squirrels, and many other animals eagerly feed on ripe or fallen fruit. Its caterpillars feed exclusively on the leaves, while adults are often seen sipping juices from fallen, fermenting fruit. As fruit naturally ferments, the sugars produce small amounts of alcohol that make it especially attractive to many butterflies, beetles, and other insects.

What Is a Fruit?

Botanically, a fruit is the mature structure that develops from a flower after pollination and contains a plant's seeds. Many familiar fruits, such as peaches, cherries, and apples, have three distinct layers: a thin outer skin (the exocarp), a fleshy middle layer (the mesocarp), and an inner layer (the endocarp) that surrounds the seed. Other plants produce dry fruits, such as acorns, walnuts, and hickory nuts, where the fleshy portion is greatly reduced or absent.

A diverse planting of fruit trees can provide food for wildlife over much of the year. By choosing species that ripen at different times—from serviceberries and mulberries in early summer to apples, persimmons, and crabapples in autumn—you can create a landscape that supports birds, pollinators, and other native animals through changing seasons while also rewarding yourself with an abundant harvest.

A sun-warmed peach picked at its peak, a handful of ripe blueberries, or sweet blackberries gathered along a garden path all taste better than fruit shipped long distances and stored in cold warehouses. Beyond feeding people, fruiting trees and shrubs provide essential food and shelter for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife, making them some of the most valuable plants in a habitat-friendly yard.

Beech trees produce small, nutritious nuts that are prized by songbirds, wild turkeys, black bears, and small mammals. Their smooth gray bark and brilliant fall color also make them outstanding landscape trees.

American Chestnut and Hybrid Chestnuts

Although the original American chestnut was devastated by chestnut blight, blight-resistant hybrids and restoration varieties are becoming available. Their sweet nuts provide food for wildlife and people alike.

Native Hickories (Carya spp.)

Shagbark, shellbark, mockernut, and pignut hickories produce rich, oily nuts that support squirrels, foxes, black bears, woodpeckers, and many other species. Mature hickories also offer excellent nesting habitat.

Hazelnuts (Corylus americana and hybrids)

American hazelnut is a multi-stemmed shrub that produces edible nuts while providing dense cover for birds and small mammals. It thrives in many parts of the eastern and central United States.

Native Plums (Prunus spp.)

American plum and Chickasaw plum bloom early for pollinators and later produce small fruits enjoyed by people, songbirds, foxes, raccoons, and other wildlife.

Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp.)

Often called juneberry or shadbush, serviceberries are among the finest small native trees for wildlife gardens. Their early white flowers support pollinators, while the sweet berries are eagerly eaten by dozens of bird species.

American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana)

Persimmons ripen in autumn and often remain on the tree after leaves have fallen. Their fruits feed opossums, raccoons, foxes, deer, wild turkeys, and many songbirds.

Pawpaw (Asimina triloba)

North America's largest native fruit produces creamy tropical-flavored fruit. Pawpaws are also the exclusive host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly, adding even more ecological value.

Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)

Clusters of white flowers attract pollinating insects in spring, followed by dark berries that are an important late-summer food source for birds. The berries can also be used in jams and syrups after proper cooking.

Native raspberries and blackberries spread naturally into wildlife-friendly thickets that provide nesting cover while producing abundant fruit for birds, mammals, and people.

Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana)

This low-growing native groundcover offers nectar-rich flowers in spring and small, flavorful berries in early summer. It also helps stabilize soil and suppress weeds.

Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum)

One of the finest native shrubs for wildlife landscaping, highbush blueberry supplies spring flowers for bees, nutritious summer berries for birds and people, and brilliant red foliage in autumn.

Grapes (Vitis spp.)

Native grapes, such as riverbank grape and fox grape, provide dense cover for wildlife and abundant clusters of fruit that sustain birds, mammals, and even some reptiles during late summer and fall.

American Holly (Ilex opaca)

Although not edible for people, its bright red berries persist into winter and become an important emergency food source for robins, cedar waxwings, mockingbirds, and other birds when little else remains.

Priority Fruiting Plants for a U.S. Wildlife Garden

One of the best ways to turn your yard into wildlife habitat is to make sure something is producing fruit during every season. Fruits provide essential energy for birds, mammals, reptiles, pollinating insects, and countless other animals. By choosing a mix of native trees, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers that ripen at different times, you can offer a reliable food source from late spring well into winter.

Different regions of the United States support different native species, but the goal is always the same: combine plants whose fruiting seasons overlap so wildlife can find food throughout the year.

Standing Dead Trees

If a tree dies, whether it is a fruit tree or not, consider leaving it standing whenever it does not pose a safety hazard. Depending on the species and climate, the wood may take years to decay, providing nesting cavities, insect habitat, roosting sites, and feeding opportunities for woodpeckers, owls, bluebirds, chickadees, nuthatches, bats, and many other native animals.
