Natural Lawn Mowers
If you have enough space, adding a domesticated grazing animal to your landscape can bring the entire yard into balance. Besides keeping vegetation trimmed—quietly and without using fuel beyond the grass it eats—grazing animals return nutrients to the soil through their manure and create an engaging, hands-on connection with nature for both children and adults.
Sheep like those shown here, as well as goats or even a small donkey, can do an excellent job of controlling vegetation. However, they are difficult to direct precisely, so it is wise to fence off areas you do not want grazed or trampled, such as vegetable gardens, wildflower meadows, newly planted beds, or sensitive habitat. Livestock should always be enclosed with secure perimeter fencing to protect both the animals and the surrounding landscape.
If your pasture includes a small shelter or barn, you are also likely to attract birds commonly associated with farms, such as Barn Swallows, Eastern Phoebes, House Wrens, or American Robins. If swallows choose to nest under the roof, avoid removing their mud nests or cleaning away old nesting sites during the breeding season. These birds seek quiet, undisturbed places to raise their young and repay the favor by consuming large numbers of flying insects. In the photograph, a hoopoe fills a similar ecological role in Europe; in North America, birds such as Northern Flickers or American Robins often benefit from the increased insect activity around livestock.
The advantages of introducing grazing animals extend well beyond lawn maintenance. Although keeping livestock may seem unusual on a suburban property, where local ordinances permit it, even a small flock can dramatically increase the ecological richness of the landscape. Their manure quickly becomes home to beetles, flies, earthworms, and countless other invertebrates. Within days, these organisms begin a natural succession that attracts insect-eating birds, reptiles, amphibians, and beneficial mammals, helping create a vibrant food web throughout the property.
Owning livestock does require responsibility, and their care should never be underestimated. They need clean water, appropriate shelter, protection from predators, routine veterinary attention, and adequate forage throughout the year. However, hardy breeds of sheep, goats, or donkeys that are well suited to the local climate are often relatively low-maintenance when managed correctly.
There are many species to choose from, but selecting traditional breeds that are adapted to your region is usually the best approach. Depending on local regulations and available space, sheep, goats, miniature donkeys, chickens, ducks, or geese can all contribute to vegetation management while adding diversity and life to the landscape. When used thoughtfully, grazing animals reduce excessive plant growth, recycle nutrients, and create a wider variety of habitats for wildlife.
There are two main reasons this approach works so well. First, without some form of disturbance—whether mowing, prescribed fire, or grazing—a few aggressive plant species often dominate and crowd out everything else. Grazing animals naturally prevent any one group of plants from taking over, allowing many different species to coexist. Rather than letting competition determine which plants survive, selective browsing creates a more balanced and diverse plant community.
Second, grazing animals can serve different purposes depending on how they are managed. If your goal is simply to keep grass short, sheep are generally an excellent choice because they prefer grasses and tend to graze evenly. Goats, however, are browsers rather than grazers. They eagerly consume shrubs, vines, and woody vegetation, making them especially useful for reclaiming overgrown areas or reducing brush in places where wildfire is a concern. Across many parts of the United States, goats are now widely used to reduce fuel loads along roadsides, parks, and natural areas because they can reach vegetation that mowers cannot.
The amount of land required depends on the species, forage quality, and management system. Miniature or standard sheep may thrive on relatively small, well-managed pastures, while goats generally require somewhat larger areas with plenty of browse. Larger animals, such as donkeys or horses, need substantially more space and are usually impractical for small residential properties. Exact stocking rates vary tremendously with rainfall, soil fertility, and pasture productivity—a lush pasture in the eastern U.S. supports far more animals than a dry rangeland in the Southwest.
Whatever animals you choose, avoid overgrazing. Excessive grazing leaves bare soil, encourages erosion, and favors weeds that thrive in nutrient-rich, disturbed ground, such as pigweed, lamb’s quarters, and other opportunistic species. A healthy pasture should always retain enough plant cover to recover quickly after grazing.
All grazing animals also need appropriate infrastructure. Provide secure fencing, reliable fresh water, shade, and shelter from severe weather. They should be easy to handle for routine health checks, vaccinations, hoof care, or veterinary treatment. Selecting breeds suited to your local climate and management goals is equally important. Some sheep breeds are adapted to extensive grazing over large areas, while others perform better in smaller pastures or homesteads. A veterinarian or your local Cooperative Extension office can help you choose breeds and management practices that fit your region.
A similar principle applies to poultry. A movable chicken tractor allows birds to forage over fresh ground every few days instead of concentrating their activity in one place. Rotating the enclosure spreads manure more evenly, reduces damage to vegetation, limits parasite buildup, and distributes the chickens’ fertilizing effect throughout the garden. This rotational approach keeps both the landscape and the flock healthier while providing natural weed and insect control.
