In many regions, stocking mosquitofish—or any fish—in a backyard wildlife pond is discouraged because they readily consume amphibian eggs, tadpoles, aquatic insects, and other wildlife.

Instead, encourage a healthy, balanced ecosystem. Dragonfly and damselfly larvae, diving beetles, backswimmers, and many other native aquatic predators consume large numbers of mosquito larvae. Keeping water circulating gently, avoiding nutrient pollution, and maintaining diverse native vegetation will naturally reduce mosquito populations.

A Pond That Works Year-Round

The truth is that most fish and amphibians are not ideal neighbors in a small backyard pond. Many fish readily eat amphibian eggs and tadpoles, making it difficult for both groups to thrive together. Fortunately, a thoughtful pond design can solve much of this problem. By creating separate shallow and deep areas—and using native emergent plants such as soft rush, pickerelweed, or bulrush as natural barriers—you can provide fish with one section of the pond while giving frogs and salamanders safer breeding habitat elsewhere.

The same concept can also help separate different groups of amphibians when needed. Larger salamanders, for example, may prey on the eggs or larvae of frogs if they share the same breeding pools. Distinct habitat zones reduce these conflicts and allow a greater diversity of wildlife to flourish.

Introducing Plants and Wildlife

Once the pond is built, the most rewarding stage begins: watching it come alive.

Finding native aquatic plants at large garden centers can sometimes be difficult, but that does not justify collecting plants from nearby wetlands, ponds, or streams. In many places, removing native plants from public lands is illegal and can damage fragile ecosystems. Instead, purchase plants from reputable native-plant nurseries or obtain divisions from friends who already maintain healthy wildlife ponds.

Adding animals requires even more caution. Many amphibians, reptiles, and other aquatic species are protected by law, and moving them between locations can spread diseases such as chytrid fungus or introduce invasive parasites. Rather than stocking the pond yourself, allow wildlife to discover it naturally. Before breaking ground, think carefully about where the pond will go. A location that receives about 4–6 hours of direct sunlight each day is ideal. Too much sun can encourage algae growth, while deep shade limits aquatic plant growth and reduces activity from pollinators and other wildlife.

If your yard has native shade trees nearby, they can help create a good balance. Some fallen leaves are beneficial because they contribute organic matter, but excessive leaf litter should be removed each autumn to keep the pond healthy.

Choose a location that is easy to enjoy from your house or patio while still providing a quiet refuge for wildlife. Rather than using a perfectly round outline, design the pond with gentle curves and an irregular shape so it blends naturally into the landscape.

1. Mark and Excavate

Outline the pond with biodegradable marking paint or a garden hose before digging. As you excavate, set aside the nutrient-rich topsoil so it can be reused later when landscaping around the pond.

Create gently sloping sides that allow birds, amphibians, and beneficial insects to enter and leave safely. For a typical backyard wildlife pond, a deepest point of 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) provides adequate water depth while remaining easy to maintain.

2. Prepare the Hole

Once excavation is complete, carefully remove all rocks, roots, and sharp objects that could puncture the liner.

Before installing the liner, cover the entire excavation with a protective underlayment. Commercial pond underlayment is ideal, but several layers of old newspapers or plain cardboard also work well and help cushion the liner from stones and roots.

3. Install the Pond Liner

If you are cutting the liner before installation, remember that it must be much larger than the finished pond to allow for the depth and gently sloping sides.

For example, a pond measuring 10 × 16 feet and about 20 inches deep will typically require a liner approximately 13 × 20 feet.

For long-lasting performance, choose a high-quality EPDM rubber liner, which is the standard recommendation for wildlife ponds in North America because of its durability, flexibility, and long service life. High-quality polyethylene liners are another option, though they generally do not last as long as EPDM.

4. Add the finishing touches and fill the pond

Spread a thin layer of the excavated soil—about 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm)—over selected areas of the liner, especially where you plan to establish aquatic plants. Bury the liner edges securely around the perimeter and cover them with rocks, logs, or native stone to create a natural-looking shoreline. Once everything is in place, begin filling the pond slowly with water.

5. Let the water settle, then add native plants

If you're filling the pond with municipal tap water, allow it to sit for a day or two so chlorine or chloramine treatments can dissipate or be neutralized before introducing wildlife. (If your utility uses chloramine, use a wildlife-safe water conditioner.)

After the water has settled, begin planting:

  • Submerged and floating native aquatic plants directly in the pond.
  • Native emergent plants such as pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata), soft rush (Juncus effusus), arrowhead (Sagittaria latifolia), or blue flag iris (Iris versicolor) around the shallow margins.

Surround the pond with native grasses, sedges, wildflowers, shrubs, and stones to blend it naturally into the landscape.

6. Let nature take over

The hardest work is finished. Now the best part begins: waiting.

Within days or weeks, the pond will begin attracting its first visitors. Aquatic insects such as water boatmen, backswimmers, diving beetles, dragonflies, damselflies, and water scavenger beetles often arrive by flight without any help. Soon afterward come frogs, toads, songbirds, butterflies, native bees, and many other animals seeking water, food, or breeding habitat.

Resist the temptation to stock the pond with fish. A fish-free pond supports a much richer diversity of amphibians and aquatic invertebrates and quickly develops into a thriving miniature wetland.

Keeping Your Wildlife Pond Healthy

How you care for your pond will largely determine the diversity and abundance of wildlife it supports. Although every pond is different, these general guidelines apply throughout much of North America.

Control overly aggressive plants

Native aquatic plants are essential, but some species can spread until they dominate the entire pond. This is a natural process, yet occasional maintenance keeps the habitat more diverse.

Late fall or winter is the best time to thin excessive growth. Pull out surplus vegetation by hand rather than using herbicides, and leave the removed plants beside the pond for a day so any insects, snails, or amphibians can crawl back into the water before composting the material.

Filamentous algae may also appear, especially in nutrient-rich water. Small amounts are beneficial, but heavy blooms can smother other life. Twirling algae around a stick or rake often removes it effectively. The long-term solution is reducing nutrient inputs by keeping fallen leaves, lawn fertilizer, pet waste, and grass clippings out of the pond.

Remove excess sediment when necessary

Over time, leaves and organic debris slowly accumulate on the bottom, gradually making the pond shallower.

Regularly skimming leaves from the surface and trimming dead vegetation slows this process, but every several years the pond may benefit from cleaning. The ideal time is during winter dormancy. Lower the water level if necessary, remove only part of the accumulated muck, and carefully rescue any insects, tadpoles, salamanders, snails, or other small creatures you encounter before replacing them in the pond.

Avoid removing all of the sediment at once, since much of the pond's wildlife overwinters there.

Prevent invasive aquatic plants

Never introduce ornamental aquatic plants without verifying that they are native or non-invasive in your region.

Many plants once sold for water gardens have escaped into natural wetlands and caused serious ecological damage. Depending on your location, invasive species may include:

These species form dense mats that crowd out native vegetation, reduce oxygen levels, and provide poor habitat for wildlife. If they appear, remove them promptly before they spread.

Repair leaks promptly

If the pond consistently loses water beyond normal evaporation, inspect it carefully for leaks.

First rule out seasonal water-level changes caused by heat and dry weather. If a leak is suspected, allow the water level to stabilize—the leak is often located at that height. Small punctures in flexible pond liners can usually be repaired with liner patch kits designed for EPDM or PVC pond liners.

A well-maintained wildlife pond requires surprisingly little work. With occasional care and plenty of patience, it will become increasingly rich in native plants, insects, amphibians, birds, and other wildlife year after year.

The aquatic nymphs of dragonflies and damselflies are among the pond’s most efficient hunters. They stalk mosquito larvae, tadpoles, and other aquatic creatures with remarkable speed, making them fascinating to watch.
